How to Choose Your First Pickleball Paddle on a Budget

You do not need a premium paddle to learn pickleball. A sensible first paddle costs far less than the top models and will carry you well past your first season. The key is knowing which features matter at the start and which you can skip.

Set a realistic budget

Very cheap wooden paddles are heavy and dead, and they make learning harder. At the other end, premium paddles are built for players who can take advantage of fine differences in feel. For most beginners, a mid-priced composite or entry-level carbon paddle is the sweet spot.

What to look for

Weight

Midweight paddles, roughly 7.6 to 8.2 ounces, balance power and control. Lighter paddles are quicker at the net but can feel unstable; heavier ones hit harder but tire the arm.

Grip size

Most adults fit a grip of around 4.25 inches. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller one and add an overgrip. A grip that is too big makes it hard to adjust the paddle face.

Shape

A standard shape has the widest sweet spot, which is forgiving while you learn. Elongated paddles add reach but punish mishits.

Core thickness

A 16 mm core is the friendliest for beginners. It softens the ball on contact and makes dinks and drops easier to control.

When to upgrade
